Oysters back in fashion in West Somerset

A group of local residents opened a groundbreaking oyster fishery yesterday to be soley run by local youth.   Porlock Futures, a group of local residents opened the sustainable community food project to be run by young local volunteers  on the advice of an innovative community think tank. The new fishery is hoped to help with youth unemployment in the local area and attract tourists to area.  The Whitby based scheme is set to last for two years. Yum!

A bright fishy future

oysterAn oyster fishery has been reopened by a group of residents to help cut youth unemployment in West Somerset.

Porlock Futures, a community food project based in Porlock, hopes to bring more tourism to the once famous oyster harbour and create a needed boost to the local economy.

The Chairman of Porlock Parish Council has said “We originally  wanted to find something which could generate employment and help the local economy, but which also fitted with the environment and the heritage”.
